Scapegoat

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scapegoat
The scapegoat was a goat that was driven off into the wilderness as part of the ceremonies of Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, in Judaism during the times of the Temple in Jerusalem. The rite is described in Leviticus 16.

Since this goat, carrying the sins of the people placed on it, is sent away to perish, the word "scapegoat" has come to mean a person, often innocent, who is blamed and punished for the sins, crimes, or sufferings of others, generally as a way of distracting attention from the real causes.

Eclipse

And it was written, at the chosen hour on the chosen day,
the sky would become black, day turns into night,
the frost princess shall be reborn, her metamorphosis complete.
she rides a cave troll to battle, and orges answer to her calls.
such eternal beauty, yet chilling to the bone...

So engrossed in their oblivious ways just mere moments ago, the monkeys now tremble in terror, the legend was true after all! Meteors shall fall, lightning smite the unworthy and oceans of flames to drown their cries.
They stared at where the sun should be, they sniffed the air, imagining the smell of sulfur and brimstones.
The usual excuses will not save anyone, for all now are equal and there were none to blame. Some pretended to be cattle, disassociation being their defense against awareness, while others beat their chest lamenting "how unfair". Here a monkey offered his unfinished bananas, there, another one volunteered to work harder, as if the last feeble pretense of diligence would somehow redeem their souls.

It got darker even more, and they knew all was lost, and faintly whimpered of how they would become better primates if only there was another chance...

Looking at the heavens with tears in their eyes, only the stillness of remorse remains.

Now the darkest hour has come to pass. The monkeys stared at one another. Mildly embarrassed, they gratefully returned to their daily lazy ways.

Promotions

May the better bootlicker win!

I noticed a consistent trend of undeserving* promotions**. This usually comes after the periodic staff appraisal runs. This phenomena takes place everywhere. Often, some of the staffs that did not receive this promotion becomes upset.

I feel that these are the possible reasons:
- Self interest >wants the increased incentive for themselves
- Lost of Pride/ego >unwilling to see someone they considered equals carry a superior title
- Personal angle of fairness >feels someone else (or themselves) is more deserving
- Interest of the company >doubts the promoted person's capacity in the new role

I do not see it that way now. Changing a person's rank and title does not change the underlying individual. It doesn't make the person superior in anyway over his/her peers. A rose by any other name is just as sweet (and the reverse applies for a pile of shit)

It is also the complete freedom of the management to do so. Almost always, this promotion has nothing to do with the individual's abilities. It's a combination of factors; very much like the four 'P's of marketing. Some understands this concept and masters it like an art, while others are just lucky.

There is no money to be made from being a sore loser or screaming sour grapes. Although I don't feel anything, I make it a practice to offer my token congratulations to the promoted.

Managing Challenges

Some asked me whether I felt excited about taking on difficult jobs. They appear to see it as fun, they wish to "seek thrill" and claim to enjoying "living dangerously".

I have to disagree. It is not fun. Fun is for games and leisure. I take my work seriously. When I take on a contract, it's because I want the pay. And by accepting, I have accepted the responsibility, I have an obligation to fulfill and must do so professionally.

受人钱财,提人消灾

I cannot go in with the attitude of a child visiting the playground, as that would mean I am not ready*.
I am also not keen on unnecessary risks. From an investment viewpoint, risks must be justified by a fair return. It's still more preferable, if we can avoid the risk and achieve the same payoff.

*the athlete who expresses a feeling of euphoria before an event is probably in a poor state of readiness.

The mark of the immature man

Being Professional

I tend to see myself as a contractor rather than an employee to a company.

The picture of a salaried 'employee' to me, hints of an exploited victim, someone who has no control and at the mercy of faceless shareholders. Someone who will always give more than he is paid. Why else would a company take him in?

As a contractor, I enter into a contract with the client company to provide services for the agreed price. I am my own company and my own product. I manage my own revenues and bottom line. I choose out of my own free choice to take on the contract and not because I'm forced to. As a professional, I do not pick my assignments. I am paid to do so and I will go where I am needed.

My work is of the highest quality so as to uphold my own reputation. Whatever title the client company bestows on me is less relevant compared to what I truely am.
If my fame grows, my services would be in demand and I can fetch higher value contracts.

Towards Managing Conflicts - With other people

Do you know how hard I tried?
to lose that foolish pride.

I find it meaningless to get into conflicts, there's seldom anything to gain and more likely will work negatively.

Getting angry with loved ones, will be regretted later.
Being sturbbon with friends erodes the friendship.
Starting a fight for whatever reason in the office, makes us look uncooperative.
Having a quarrel with strangers can at best ruin your mood, or (in the worst scenario) result in some less sane individual coming after your family, yourself or your properties.

Better to lose my pride for someone I love, than the other way round.
Remember the times our friends give in to our tantrums.
Keep cool, save the job, win that promotion, earn respect.
Often, "getting even" may not be worth it. It might be easier to just let the moment past, and enjoy the rest of the day.

sometimes I could give up
sometimes I could give,
sometimes I don't give a ...

Death of a party

"Sadly it's time for us to go" This is not the most welcomed email subject, not when it came from the ishop. I hope there are alternative service centers available.

And so the shop where I bought my macbook will be gone by next month. Not completely left high and dry, but still quite the sour taste.

The blessed, and the least favored -Session1

There is one, and then there is the other.
By virtue of the alignment of the constellations it was decided.
One, the heir apparent, another, the family's bane.
This is the story of the later.

He should have been cast into the river upon birth, and was fortunate such was not the case. Resigned to his banishment, he only sought a humble existence among fellow peasants. Even while he lived in the House, simple folk fare had always been his preference. He only wanted to live in peace.

Yet the same Kingdom which rejected him, would not leave things well enough alone. His calling came least expected, and in the guise of fame and fortune, was the option of more or less certain death.

Much was said of why he chose to go, yet the true reason, himself does not know. Fame and title appealed little to him, nor did he care much about saving the Kingdom from a rebellion. A 'romantic' some would say, but a cynical man has few emotions, and honors he needed none.

He stood before the nobles, ready to embark. To receive their blessings. To hear the words they wish to say, and to say the words they wish to hear. Towards the wonderful promises of rewards, he held no expectations. Between the path of nails and the path of needles, he simply chose the path they chose for him.

To be continued...

Transition Issues Log - Bootcamp Win XP installation

Recreating Windows Partitions
When trying to modify the windows partition size, DO NOT do it using disk utility.
Go to BootCamp Assistant > Create or remove a Windows partition > Restore (this will delete the entire Windows partition, and all data will be lost)
Continue using BootCamp assistant to create a new partition.

FAT32 vs NTFS
Though NTFS is more secure than FAT, you won't be able to write or save files to the Windows volume from Mac OS X.
FAT32 partitions also cannot be more than 32GB.

BootCamp win XP Installation Process
Google for instructions. (here is one link) But the most important point to note, most general instructions are meant for a FAT32 format. most will warn of this common mistake:
After initiating the BootCamp > Start windows installation, you will be booted to a DOS prompt.
(if using FAT32 format) DO NOT select Leave The Current File System Intact—make sure you format the partition to NTFS or FAT using.
*But this 2nd problem is rarely mentioned* (If using the NTFS format) DO NOT go ahead with above step. You will probably get the hal.dll error (see below) Follow the instructions given below...

hal.dll errors
If it was NTFS then you may have the hal.dll (Hardware Abstraction Layer) missing error.
After the initial dos based copy phase of the Windows install, I'm getting the following error on a black screen:
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\system32\hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

Solution
Many suggestions can be found online, but So far, only this worked. (specification: my system is partitioned as OS X> 24GB ; WinXP > 120 GB NTFS)
A match made in hell: Windows XP, Boot Camp 2.0, and NTFS

After the computer has rebooted and it’s booted from the CD, type “R” to go to the console. You should be dumped to the C:\ prompt.

We’re going to reformat the drive as NTFS ourselves instead of letting the Windows installer do it. Type the following and hit Return:
format c: /q /fs:ntfs

Then type this to reboot the computer:
exit

Hold Option after it restarts, then boot to the Windows installation CD again (I believe it boots to the CD by default at this point, but this is just to be sure).

Install to C: (be careful not to select your OS X volume!), but—and this is important—choose NOT to reformat. Leave the file system as is.

Continue the installation process as you would normally.
If things went well, the 256-color Windows logo should load

Unbias Bab~

ill found anger

His cause was just, his purpose true. His anger mighty, his warcries bellowed deep.
"How dare the pale one be so bold!" The pale one who now trespasses his soil, who points a finger at his pride.

The pale one must pay! The tribe stands ready, his fist points the way. HE who is the light of the land, HE who bears the mark of the greater beaver, HE the servant of the peaceful hammer, who must now deal justified violence, for the greater good...

Eric Hoffer -The Desire For Substitutes

  • There is a fundamental difference between the appeal of a mass movement and the appeal of a practical organization. The practical organization appeal to self-interest. A mass movement, to those who crave to be rid of an unwanted self.
  • We join a mass movement to escape individual responsibility
  • They who clamor loudest for freedom are often the ones least likely to be happy in a free society. The frustrated, oppressed by their shortcomings, blame their failure on existing restraints. Actually, their innermost desire is for an end to the "free for all." They want to eliminate free competition and the ruthless testing to which the individual is continually subjected in a free society.
  • Passionate hatred can give meaning and purpose to an empty life. Thus people haunted by the purposelessness of their lives try to find a new content not only by dedicating themselves to a holy cause but also by nursing a fanatical grievance. A mass movement offers them unlimited opportunities for both.
  • The truth seems to be that propaganda on its own cannot force its way into unwilling minds; It penetrates only into minds already open, and rather than instill opinion it articulates and justifies opinions already present in the minds of its recipients. The gifted propagandist brings to a boil ideas and passions already simmering in the minds of his hearers. he echoes their innermost feelings. Where opinion is not coerced, people can be made to believe only in what they already "know."
  • A man is likely to mind his own business when it is worth minding. When it is not, he takes his mind off his own meaningless affairs by minding other people's business.
  • It is doubtful if the oppressed ever fight for freedom. They fight for pride and power — power to oppress others. The oppressed want above all to imitate their oppressors; they want to retaliate.

Another monkey bites the dust

the stillness of remorse was all that remained

His cold stiff body was discovered slumped over the desk, the constant hum of a still functioning low noise laptop grimly loud in the glowing silence. sound effects from an ironic graveyard screen saver periodically interrupts the peace, reinforcing that morbid reminder of the harsh realities facing modern day hunters...

Body's Breathing While It Can

My Doctor told me it's due to accumulated fatigue. All the work , training and lack of rest kept my immunities low. Which was why I fall sick so often. I also received some sleeping pills for my insomnia, I'll take her advise and give myself a long break.

- Cut down on exercise
- force myself to sleep early
- just sit back an relax, (during holidays etc.)
- Avoid outdoor activities (due to fickle weather conditions)

Cough syrup is making me drowsy...

I must be going insane,
went to the doctor so that he could relieve my pain,
he's got a little pill for me, just a little luxury,
to help me through my day.

Towards Financial Liberation

A series of events woke me up to the error of my ways.

Consequences of past relationships which I allowed to stagnate; bridges I didn't built; friends I neglect because of my arrogance.

Some of the opportunities lost were great and others minor. Ironically, some doors would not have opened if I had not made the right mistakes.

I also learnt about the concept of financial freedom and how interesting the journey to get there. It made the micro concerns of the rat race seem so insignificant.

Injustice is bound to occur, but the greater potentials has desensitized me to such trivia pricks. If I plan my cards right, I would have the freedom to just walk away.

Discworld - Guards! Guards!

Snippet
They may be called the Palace Guard, the City Guard, or the Patrol. Whatever the name, their purpose in any work of heroic fantasy is identical: it is, round Chapter Three (or ten minutes into the film) to rush into the room, attack the hero one at a time, and be slaughtered. No-one ever asks them if they wanted to. This book is dedicated to those fine men.

How to set thunderbird to correctly attach files

Text files (with Content-Disposition: attachment instead of inline)
Thunderbird has to set "Content-Disposition: inline" by default. It means when you attach a text file to an outgoing e-mail, the contents would be display as part of the email.

"Edit" -> "Preferences" -> "Advanced" -> "Config Editor".
(Using the windows version it's probably "Tools" -> "Options" -> etc.)

set mail.content_disposition_type to 1 (default is 0)

Great Pink Shark

Co-Aurthored Story

Inevitably, the aristocrat resists his final duty
— which is to step aside and vanish into history

Much feared was Phoebe the Great Pink.
but alas she found herself sitting in a little tank. not quite the great throne room she had planned.
Space was less than half it was, in misery she lament her loss.
No pink seaweed to hide behind, from around her the view which irks her mind
The sight of bottom feeders, happily going about their business.
"Good morrow" they greeted her, secretly they mocked her.
She calls out to her minions, desperately seeking reassurance.
but alas they're long gone, like the migrating turtles that's moved on.
the sucker fishes she used to carry, all left seeking the next swollen belly.
be it pink, yellow, soft or hard, care not, so long they too partake in the fresh offered cup.
Gone now the shroud of fear, as memories of her fade and disappear.
those who were happy, let them be happy still,
those who were greedy, let them be greedy still.
But let those who think her gone, soon learn they were wrong, oh so very wrong.
In the dark she bids her time. She'll have them pay for their crime.
plotting her righteous vengeance. on her treacherous turncoat traitor legions

Lasik - Consent Form

Kept a copy of the consent form. The full agreement terms were infact rather unsettling, more so since it was only shown to me to sign just before the operation. Some of the (more horrifying)side effects were initially not described with as much detail as during the briefing.

Space Pen

One of my favorite story, a good lesson, even though its fictional:

SPACE PEN
When NASA first started sending up astronauts, they discovered that ball-point pens would not work in zero gravity. To combat this problem, NASA scientists spent a decade and $12 million developing a pen that writes in zero gravity, upside down, underwater, on almost any surface including glass and at temperatures ranging from below freezing to over 300C.

When confronted with the same problem, the Russians used a pencil.

Lasik

"Eyes like a hawk's"

Finally did my lasik, perfect vision is so convenient. The day of wiping smudged glasses is over.

Immediate noticeable difference in vision distance/sharpness and greatly increased peripheral vision.
.
.
.
.

Wheelock Place

3Jan - Pre-lasik check

Test result, clear, with 97% sucess rate to achieve driving vision without glasses.

15Jan - Actual Lasik

Halfway through I recalled the procedure and realized they were cutting my conea flap open.

Watched the tip of the surgery tool being used to 'flip' open the cut flap, vision on first eye went blurry. And they moved on to the next eye.

Walked out of the surgery room, already able to see. Went home unaided after a 20mins rest.

Wore googles to shower, eye shield to bed.

Eyes were very dry and uncomfortable. Mostly slept. Apply eye drops every hour (steroids/antibiotics)

16Jan - First day post surgery checkup

Test result: Eye is healthy, free of infections

Eye drops every two hours (steroids/antibiotics)

Walked around town wearing shades.

Able to watch DVDs (can't sleep anymore, nothing to do)

17Jan -

Able to read emails now. Went to town. As if normal

Eye drops four times a day (steroids/antibiotics)

Experienced phantom glasses syndrome.

19Jan-

(Monday) Back to work

22Jan - First week post surgery checkup

Test result: achieved perfect vision.
Eye drops four times a day (artifical tears only)

Definition of Justice

Justice = A blind woman swinging a big sword... '''

(7July 2009) I'd like to add some additional revelations:

This was not obvious at first. The weighing scale she holds measures who can pay more. This is a fair comparison since the weigh of gold does not lie. It ensures the sword does not slice randomly.

The blindfold is used so that judgment is not clouded by emotions. She does not care who is paying. But this is redundant since justice was already blind to begin with.

Eric Hoffer -The Passionate State Of Mind Part 4

Secretiveness is a source of pride. It is a paradox that secretiveness plays the same role as boasting - both are engaged in the creation of a disguise. Boasting tries to create an imaginary self, while secretiveness gives us the exhilarating feeling of being princes disguised in meekness. Of the two, secretiveness is the more difficult and effective. For the self-observant, boasting breeds self-contempt. Yet, it is as Spinoza said: "Men govern nothing with more difficult than their tongues, and they can moderate their desires more than their words." Humility, however, is not verbal renunciation of pride but the substitute of pride for self-awareness and objectivity. Forced humility is false pride.
